Rockman X: Cyber Mission
Portable glory. Rockman X: Cyber Mission, known as 90’s kid coolness “MegaMan Xtreme” in the West, was released for the Gameboy Colour and takes place between X2 and 3 chronologically. X and Zero deal with a mini-incident involving a few knuckleheads trying to hack the Hunter Base’s main computer. X turns himself into data and enters the computer! So it’s kinda like EXE in a way?! Anyway, this has the translated Japanese script and the English script (as provided by MMKB – the Megaman Knowledge Base). The localization was interesting. It seemed to be a mix of a decent job and a bad job. Which, overall, equals a pretty poor job. Let’s see how my (generally literal) amateur translations compare to their professional localization job! SNAP. This has a decent amount of dialogue and will be pretty long, so I’ll shorten the amount of Impressions/Translation Notes to those I feel are more necessary. PROLOGUE 序章

In the year 21XX… The world has become a place where the human race coexists with Reploids. Many years ago a mysterious blue robot was found. Named Megaman X, this robot possessed a high level of intelligence. It also was able to display emotions like humans. Megaman X was a robot that people thought could never be duplicated by modern science. Even though Megaman X is a good natured robot with a kind and warm personality, he also has the power to cause a lot of destruction.
Dr. Cain studied and analyzed Megaman X, and then succeeded in creating the “Reploids.” However, some Reploids began to malfunction due to problems with their electronic brain. They are called “Mavericks”. The Reploids who hunt them are called “Maverick Hunters.” In order to help Megaman X became a Maverick Hunter. Later, a red robot was found. This robot named, “ZERO” had high attack power. When he was found, he was out of control like all the other Mavericks. The strongest Reploid, Sigma, helped to bring Zero under control. Sigma took Zero under his watch. After that, Zero never malfunctioned again and was eventually promoted to a Special A level Hunter.
Soon after, Sigma rose in revolt and tried to destroy everything. And then the Mavericks kept increasing and became more powerful. But thanks to X and ZERO’s work, the peace was restored over and over again. However…

It has been a long time since the robot of many mysteries was found. Rockman X was a high-power robot that could not be analyzed even by modern science, and had the ability to think and “worry” almost like a human. However, while he held infinite potential, at the same there was infinite risk concealed within him.
Using X as a reference, Dr. Cain successfully developed “Repliroids”. However, Repliroids who were affected by problems in their electronic brains were called “Irregulars”, and the Repliroids who were to police them were called “Irregular Hunters”. X became a member of these Irregular Hunters.
Then, a red robot was discovered. This robot “Zero” possessed high attack power, but when he was discovered he was already rampaging similar to an Irregular. The strongest repliroid, Sigma, subdued him. Partly to monitor him, Sigma made Zero into his subordinate. Afterwards Zero never went wild again, and even got promoted to Special A Class hunter.
After that…. Sigma evokes a rebellion. Irregulars increase in number, and powerful foes appear one after the other. However, due to the actions of X and Zero, peace has been restored numerous times. Now, in the present….

Impressions 感想
Small localization difference changes the tone of Techno quite a bit. In the English one he just goes “huh” after seeing X’s actions; mild surprise? Sounds kinda funny. In the Japanese one, he chuckles to himself, showing amusement. This fits with Techno’s intended personality more and is probably just a translation error. Also there’s that damned word again…~CRUSH~ when he literally says he’ll “stop” X in Japanese.
