Rockman X1

The first of glory. This is the Rockman/Mega Man X1 Japanese Script translation and its comparison to the English script. The old leader of the Maverick (Irregular in Japan) Hunters, Sigma, rebels against humankind and gets in the grill of the world. X and his pal Zero go to stop him. There were more differences between the scripts than I thought there would be, but even so, a lot of the variations can be attributed to the translators just changing things up a bit to sound cooler or whatever they wanted in English (I was a bit literal with most of the translating to show this point). For the dialogue sequences, I split it into sections. First is the English script, as provided by the Megaman Knowledge Base. Then the script in Japanese, some provided by 120Yen then checked by me in-game and the rest (the capsule dialogues, Zero’s pre-Sigma stage dialogue and epilogue scroll) copied down by me while playing the game. Lastly, what follows is a translation of that Japanese text, by me. It might be a little long to read, because the Japanese and translated scripts are written as they would appear in the game’s dialogue boxes instead of one big paragraph.

Name Changes

In Japanese the bosses were given stylized names that still reflected their animal. In English their last names were just straight-up what animal they were. The Japanese ones are more creative, but in the series there have been some pretty cracked names. English on left, Japanese on right.

(The word he uses for the waterfall (possibly Niagara Falls) is “Daibakufu”. He says the “bakufu” is not the same “bakufu” as used in “Edobakufu” which is the name of the shogunate during the Edo period.)

Vile: What the…? Where did that energy come from?! It really doesn’t matter how much energy you absorb, X, you are still far too weak! Prepare to be terminated!

If X received the Arm Upgrade

Zero: X, I’ve taken too much damage…Auto repair systems can’t handle it…my power is fading fast….Your power is greater than I thought. Maybe you can destroy Sigma….

(Zero dies.)

If X did not receive the Arm Upgrade

Zero: You are more powerful than before, but Sigma is much more than he appears to be. You’re going to need an edge. Take my arm cannon and your power should increase. Good luck, X!

(Sigma fights X in two forms, eventually being defeated for good.)

Sigma: No! It’s not possible!! I’m a Reploid! I can’t be destroyed by you! Why, X?! Why have you done this to us? Without the humans, my Reploid brothers could have ushered in a new age….

(Final Sigma explodes just as X teleports out of the room.)

Exhausted, X gazes at the destruction he helped cause and wonders why he chose to fight. Was there another way?

Standing on the cliff, the answers seem to escape him. He only knows that he’ll fight the Mavericks again before he finds his answer.

How long will he keep on fighting? How long will his pain last? Maybe only the X-Buster on his hand knows for sure…
