The first of glory. This is the Rockman/Mega Man X1 Japanese Script translation and its comparison to the English script. The old leader of the Maverick (Irregular in Japan) Hunters, Sigma, rebels against humankind and gets in the grill of the world. X and his pal Zero go to stop him. There were more differences between the scripts than I thought there would be, but even so, a lot of the variations can be attributed to the translators just changing things up a bit to sound cooler or whatever they wanted in English (I was a bit literal with most of the translating to show this point). For the dialogue sequences, I split it into sections. First is the English script, as provided by the Megaman Knowledge Base. Then the script in Japanese, some provided by 120Yen then checked by me in-game and the rest (the capsule dialogues, Zero’s pre-Sigma stage dialogue and epilogue scroll) copied down by me while playing the game. Lastly, what follows is a translation of that Japanese text, by me. It might be a little long to read, because the Japanese and translated scripts are written as they would appear in the game’s dialogue boxes instead of one big paragraph.

In Japanese the bosses were given stylized names that still reflected their animal. In English their last names were just straight-up what animal they were. The Japanese ones are more creative, but in the series there have been some pretty cracked names. English on left, Japanese on right.
VILE = VAVA
CHILL PENGUIN = ICY PENGUIGO
FLAME MAMMOTH = BURNIN’ NOUMANDER
ARMORED ARMADILLO = ARMOR ARMARGE
STORM EAGLE = STORM EAGLEED
STING CHAMELEON = STING CHAMELEAO
BOOMER KUWANGER = DOCTOR JEFFERSON (jk it was unchanged)
SPARK MANDRILL = SPARK MANDRILLER
LAUNCH OCTOPUS = LAUNCHER OCTOPULD
INTRO STAGE オープニングステージ
Vile: You worthless piece of scrap metal, did you think you could defeat me?!
(Zero fires charge shots at Vile, chasing him off)
X: I guess I’m not powerful enough to defeat him…
Zero: X, you shouldn’t expect to defeat him; he is designed to be a war machine. Remember, you have not reached full power yet. If you use all the abilities you were designed with, you should become stronger…you may even become as powerful as I am. I’ll scout ahead and collect as much information on Sigma’s fortress as I can. I’ll meet up with you when you get there. See you later! X, I know you can do it!
Vava: Fool! Did you think you could defeat me?
One has but one life; you should’ve used yours with more care! Hahahaha!
(Zero’s buster hits Vava, Vava gets away)
X: D, damn it! Am I not able to defeat them with my power?
Zero: X, as you are now, I doubt you can defeat Sigma and the others.
However, you have a power within you that increases your abilities with battle!
With that power you should grow stronger!
Even stronger than I am now…I’m sure of it!
I’m going to go on ahead and look for Sigma’s hideout.
You wipe out the hunters around the area.
Let’s meet again later…
X…don’t die on me…
First notable thing is Vile/Vava has an extra block of dialogue compared to the English release.
Zero is a bit blunter with the opening line, basically saying “yeah you probably can’t”. However, he still gives him a pep talk (though slightly different, citing a power that depends on the fights X has) and still says he will be one day stronger than Zero himself. Unlike the English version, he references the bosses as “Hunters”, in reference to the story, where the Irregular bosses were previous Irregular Hunters persuaded to join Sigma. He uses strong language in reference to defeating them though, more like “tear them apart”, “wreck them”, etc.
Chill Penguin’s Stage’s Capsule アイシー・ペンギーゴのステージのカプセル
Dr. Light: So you’ve come…X, I gave you the ability to choose your own path in life, and I hoped the world would allow you to choose a peaceful one. But now it seems that you are destined to fight. Because I thought the world might need a new champion, I have hidden capsules like this one. If you find and use them you will be able to increase your powers beyond anything the world has ever known. Good luck, X!
Dr. Light: エックスよ、やはり
Dr. Light: X, so you have come just as expected…
If possible, I wanted you to bring about peaceful days, but…
I wonder if this, too, is fate…
Enter the capsule, X.
If you do, you will become able to dash and your movement abilities should upgrade significantly.
There are capsules like this hidden around the area. If you want to become stronger, you will seek out the capsules!
There will be many difficult things, but…do your best…X…
Dr. Light’s speech is a bit different. He doesn’t go on about X being a champion, instead pondering fate, saying he wanted X to bring about peace, and just explainin’ the boots.
Storm Eagle’s Stage’s Capsule ストーム・イーグリードのステージのカプセル
Dr. Light: This capsule contains an enhancement for your helmet which will allow you to break up some ceilings with a headbutt.
Dr. Light: ここでは、ヘルメットを
Dr. Light: Here I will give you a part that will power up your helmet.
With a head attack, you will be able to break special roofs and continue through them.
Flame Mammoth’s Stage’s Capsule バーニン・ナウマンダーのステージのカプセル
Dr. Light: This capsule contains a part which will increase the abilities of your X-Buster. You can use it to fire all types of weapons.
Dr. Light: ここでは、エックスバスターを
Dr. Light: Here I will equip you with parts that will power up your X Buster.
By charging up every type of shot, you’ll be able to dish out even stronger attacks.
Sting Chameleon’s Stage’s Capsuleスティングカメリーオのステージのカプセル
Dr. Light: This capsule contains a new type of body armor. It will reduce damage to your systems by 50 percent.
Dr. Light: ここでは、ボディをパワーアップ
Dr. Light: Here I will give you a part that powers up your body.
It will halve the damage you take.
Armor Armadillo’s Stage (Hadoken) アーマー・アルマージのステージ（波動拳）
Dr. Light: X, I give you a special present. Now enter the capsule, please!
Dr. Light: ふふふ、どうじゃエックス！
Dr. Light: Huhuhu, how’s this, X! My body has been toned up!
In the Great Waterfalls (Daibakufu) you see behind me, I have trained and trained!
Even if it’s called “bakufu”, it’s not as in “edobakufu”!
But that doesn’t matter! X! You will enter this capsule!
The move which I have learnt through training I will bestow upon you! However, how to use it, you have to find out on your own!
X, it’s time for training! All you can do is train!
Whoa now, completely different bag of beans being sold here. Dr. Light has a whole speech in the Japanese version, going on about training in the waterfall (the one in the stage background) and such. I think a main reason it was scrapped in the English release was because of the lame joke he tells that’s only relevant to Japanese speakers. The word he uses for the waterfall (possibly Niagara Falls) is “Daibakufu”. He says the “bakufu” is not the same “bakufu” as used in “Edobakufu” which is the name of the shogunate during the Edo period. One’s waterfall, one’s samurais. The joke is pretty lame and forced, especially since no one friggen says “Daibakufu” as far as I know (pretty archaic I guess?), which in itself is why it’s kinda funny.
SIGMA FORTRESS シグマステージ
(After defeating all Mavericks イレギュラーの全員を倒した後)
Zero: Finally, we’ve found Sigma’s fortress! Let’s go in and put an end to his war against the humans!
Zero: X, I’ve finally found Sigma’s hideout! It’s an incredibly huge fortress!
It doesn’t seem possible to take it on by normal means, but with our power we will settle this in one swift stroke!
(Entering Sigma’s Stage シグマのステージに入った所)
Zero: Let’s split up. I’ll go in first and then you can slip in while I keep the main defense force busy!
Zero: Let’s split up to spread out the enemies’ attacks, X!
I’ll go on ahead! You come afterwards!
INSIDE FORTRESS/VILE シグマステージ/VAVA戦
Zero: Stay back, X! I’ll take him on!
(X chases after them to find Zero captured.)
Vile: X, do what I say or he’s history!
Zero: Don’t listen to him, X! Go ahead and blast him!!
Vile: Dream on, Zero! X knows he can’t defeat me! My armored carrier is more than a match for his ancient weapons!
(X loses to Vile again)
Zero: Maybe…but I’m not through yet!
(Zero self-destructs, destroying Vile’s ride armor)
Vile: What a worthless gesture! I can’t be defeated so easily! So X, it’s just you and me now!
(X absorbs energy and gets to his feet.)
Vile: What the…? Where did that energy come from?! It really doesn’t matter how much energy you absorb, X, you are still far too weak! Prepare to be terminated!
If X received the Arm Upgrade
Zero: X, I’ve taken too much damage…Auto repair systems can’t handle it…my power is fading fast….Your power is greater than I thought. Maybe you can destroy Sigma….
If X did not receive the Arm Upgrade
Zero: You are more powerful than before, but Sigma is much more than he appears to be. You’re going to need an edge. Take my arm cannon and your power should increase. Good luck, X!
Vava: ずいぶん いせいがいいな
Vava: な、なにいー！！ おまえに、
Zero: エックス、むねんだが オレは
Zero: X, step back! I’ll take this guy down!
(When X runs after them, Zero is captured.)
Vava: Huhuhu, do you want to save him? X! If you want to save him, listen to my orders! If you do that, I’ll spare his life…
Zero: X, don’t worry about me and take this guy out!
Vava: You’re awfully spirited, eh, Zero! If that’s what you want, so be it…
X, you’ve probably gotten a bit stronger, but my ride armor has been greatly powered up!
Come at me, and I’ll show you your place! Here I come!!
(X is on the verge of death then Zero jumps onto Vava)
Zero: Your opponent isn’t X, but me!
(Zero self-destructs and Vava’s armor is destroyed.)
Vava: What a stupid idiot, did you think you could defeat ME with something like that?!
So, X, your turn’s next! Are you ready?!
(X’s life fully recovers.)
Vava: Wha, whaaat!! There was still that much power leftover in you?!
Hmph, whatever! Soon I will let you join Zero who died in vain!!
X, prepare yourself!!!
After Destruction of Vava, Got the arm part
Zero: X, regretfully, this is as far as I go…
Your power has surpassed my own…
If it’s you as you are now…you might be able…to…defeat…Sigma…
After Destruction of Vava, Didn’t get the arm part
Zero: You’ve sure become a lot stronger, X…
But Sigma holds a power that cannot be gauged from appearances alone…
I am no longer able to fight…my last request, X, only for you…
Take my arm parts…your attack power should power up to a whole new level…
Of course, that is if you can master it…
I’m counting on you…
This is a long one. The early stuff is pretty much the same, but Vile/Vava makes mention that his Ride Armour got powered up from before which the English version doesn’t make mention of. I guess that’s why Zero couldn’t scratch it unlike before. Also, while still 100% confidence in his ability to win, Vava/Vile actually admits that X’s power has grown at least by a bit in the Japanese version.
Zero jumping on the Armour and Vava/Vile scoffing at the gesture are also pretty similar with some variance, like his more shocked reaction to X getting back up and mentioning Zero died in vain (literally “a dog’s death”) for some extra salt.
Zero’s death WITH the arm part feels slightly more dramatic in Japanese than in English and makes no mention of auto-repair systems.
Zero’s death WITHOUT the arm part is also more dramatic in Japanese. He’s pretty peppy in the English version before dying, really.
SIGMA FIGHT シグマ戦
Sigma: Welcome! I see you managed to get here by yourself. Very impressive! I could destroy you, but I would not rob my pet of that pleasure. He knows how to deal with betrayers. Should you live, I will be waiting for you. Don’t disappoint me, X!
(Velgaurder attacks X, but is defeated.)
Sigma: Excellent job, X! I can see why Zero counted on you. You are almost as good of a Hunter as I was. But, the time of your destruction has arrived! You will regret ever having defied me!!
(Sigma fights X in two forms, eventually being defeated for good.)
Sigma: No! It’s not possible!! I’m a Reploid! I can’t be destroyed by you! Why, X?! Why have you done this to us? Without the humans, my Reploid brothers could have ushered in a new age….
(Final Sigma explodes just as X teleports out of the room.)
Sigma: Huhuhu… incredible, X. That you’ve made it all the way here alone. Truly incredible.
Well then, I wish you could do battle with me, but unfortunately my pet won’t let that happen, you see.
After all, I’ve entrusted all dealings with traitors to him.
Now then X, I am hoping from the bottom of my heart to be able to battle with you. Hahahahaha…
(Fight with Velgaurder, Velgauder is destroyed)
Sigma: Impressive, X. That is the reason you are the man that Zero had counted on.
Now, as desired, I will become your opponent. You shall regret standing against me in the afterlife!
(X defeats Sigma)
Sigma: I, impossible…for I to have been done in by a bug like you…
Why…why have you defied me…?
We would have begun…the age…of…Reploids……
Pre-dog fight is pretty similar. Sigma makes mention that he does wish to fight X, though, in Japanese.
Next line is also similar, but in Japanese Sigma makes no comparison between himself and X as hunters.
This, too, is basically the same. The Sigma lines have interestingly little mild variation compared to some other areas. The English script has him shouting in disbelief, though, compared to the Japanese script where he just kinda trails off in disbelief.
The war has ended for now and peace has been restored. But those who sacrificed themselves for the victory will never return.
Exhausted, X gazes at the destruction he helped cause and wonders why he chose to fight. Was there another way?
Standing on the cliff, the answers seem to escape him. He only knows that he’ll fight the Mavericks again before he finds his answer.
How long will he keep on fighting? How long will his pain last? Maybe only the X-Buster on his hand knows for sure…
ふたたび へいわな あさが
どこまで つづくので あろうか。
いつまで つづくので あろうか。
The battle is over. When tomorrow comes, perhaps a peaceful morning will come once again. However, those who were hurt, have fallen, and disappeared into the darkness of the night will not greet that morning.
The shape of X standing alone is illuminated in the light of the explosion and right now it, too, seemed like it could disappear.
Why did he have to fight? Nobody will give X an answer to that question. With little time to rest, the Irregulars will appear again somewhere and X will once more be sucked into the spiral of combat…
He who won’t dispose of kindness, Irregular Hunter X. How far will his fight continue? How long will his pain go on? Together, with the radiance of the X buster that shines coldly on his arm…
Snap. I always liked the ending scroll in the English version, but the Japanese one is quite a bit more poetic that I hoped I captured a’ight in translating.
After Ending エンディング後
Sigma: You have won a temporary victory, X! What you destroyed was only a temporary body – my spirit remains intact. In time I will find other bodies strong enough to do my bidding and I will return. I shall see you soon, X. Very soon…
Sigma: What you defeated was not my true self. The machine that was destroyed was more like another body. I will materialize and resurrect once more… X, I am looking forward to the day we meet again. Hahahahaha…
