INTRO 序論

This guide is focused on Kiryu’s “Another Drama”, a secondary list of missions each character has unique to them that differs from normal side missions. For Kiryu, it’s driving a cab and doing Initial D races which become unlocked automatically after progressing through the story a bit. Also he’s going by the alias “Suzuki”. Once you complete all the missions, you will receive a Dragon’s Scale.

This will go through the various types of things involved: Customize, Race Battles and Taxi Missions and the Free Drives.

Talking to Hirakawa, the lady at the front desk, will bring you to the Mission and Customization screen. The missions are the top option with customization on the bottom. They should be obvious by their respective icons. When you enter the mission option, there are further choices. The race missions are the top option. Then, the customer list is the middle options. The bottom is Free Drive (you just go around collecting points) and, later, Free Battle. When you enter customization, you can customize various parts as you level up. Levelling up involves doing the missions and doing them well. We’ll start with Customize and what levelling up brings you:

Naturally, the customization areas and the upgrades are all written in Japanese so it might not mean much to write them all out like this. However, since nothing can go wrong in customize, you can go ahead and flick around the options to see what option leads to what. The camera will zoom in on the appropriate part of the car. General rule of thumb is that each new upgrade is better so just keep rocking those. There is a bit of choice, though. Also:

  • Stickers, body colour, and tire design are all purely cosmetic.
  • Turbo booster is for rockin’ dat NOS and having a temporary boost of speed.
  • To get max speed upgrade tune-up to max, have semi-racing tires and Chassis Type C
  • Which is: チューンレベルMAX, セミレーシングタイヤ, シャシータイプC
  • There’s also a set-up where’s it’s near-max speed and maxed other stats, with Chassis Type B. I used that.

MUSIC:
You can also get alternative BGMs, which include some good ol’ SEGA classics! If you talk to Kiyokawa, who is beside Hirakawa (lady at desk) and will appear after the second selectable race mission, he will give you the CD “GET TO THE TOP”. Afterwards, if you go to your cell phone from the pause menu (携帯) you will have unlocked the CD store. For 2500 yen each you can buy:

  • “MachineGun Kiss”
  • “Let’s go away”
  • “Remember R-001”
  • “magical sound shower”

These can also be changed in the Customize menu.

RACE MISSIONS レースミッション

The main story-driven part of Kiryu’s Another Drama is his Race Missions against the Devil Killer gang that have been harassing drivers.

RACE NOTES:

  • Most races involve 2 or 3 laps in either the inner, middle or outer track. The middle and outer tracks will have tightish corners.
  • There’s a drift button, which is probably recommended, but I managed to glide through all corners by just letting go of the acceleration for a bit and coasting around the corner. I’ve actually never tried drifting because I forgot it existed. So it’s possible to win with just good ol’ steady turns.
  • In the bottom corner there is a meter that goes up progressively. This is your turbo. Press X to use it. Recommended for good straight stretches like the finish line stretch, etc. With this, you can go past your speed limit for a short burst.
  • Areas marked green on the road can be HEAT ACTION’d for cinematic super boosts and drifts and stuff. A triangle will appear on screen when you can use it. You can only use each area once per race, so I recommend saving those for the last lap to either put the nail in the coffin of your opponent or make that miraculous comeback.
  • Every time you win a race battle 10,000 yen will be deposited into your ATM found at convenience stores.
  • You should do plenty of missions with customers so that you will gain points to raise your driver level and buy upgrades. Doing this will make the races easier.
  • Even if you lose the race, you can try again as much as you want.
    • Going to the Result screen from a failure will result in no points.
  • If you don’t clear the mission you cannot progress to the next one (duh).
  • Spamming taunt when in the lead makes the opponent say the same thing over and over again.
  • There are blatant rubberband catch-ups by your opponent. Even if you completely outclass them, they might zoom past you at some point in the race. That’s why saving the Heat Action is good, so you can just easily pass by them again.
  • Hirakawa doesn’t seem to realize you’re racing, unlike everyone else in the office. When you get a call to race, she thinks it’s just a customer.

RACE CONTROLS:
Left stick: Move the vehicle, left and right.
Right stick: –
L3 (left stick click): Honk horn
D-pad Left/Right: Turning on/off the blinker (turn signal).
Circle: Drift
Triangle: Burn Rubber/Explosive/Spinout/YEEEAH Heat Action
Square: Taunt
L1: Perspective Change
L2: Brake
R1: –
R2: Accelerate

On Drifting:
When you are going around a curve, if you hold Circle your tires will slip and you can turn the way your car is facing more than normal. While this makes it easier to turn, your speed will drop. As I said before, I did fine without it, honestly.

On HEAT Actions:
For the middle road, in the tunnel, there is a condition in order to use the HEAT action. In the HEAT Action Zone, if you drive right behind the two trucks that are driving side-by-side (so you’re right in between them) then the button prompt will flash.
If you use a turbo boost in a HEAT Action Zone, you cannot use that HEAT Action any longer. So time your boost well.

RACE MISSION LIST:
List of Japanese and English titles for each mission.

  • 激突!デビルキラー/Duel! Devil Killer
  • 息子を訪ねて/Visit my Son
  • 四天王、現る!/The Four Heavenly Kings Appear!
  • 走り屋の血/A Racer’s Blood
  • 傾向と対策/Tendencies and Countermeasures
  • ベテランの味/Taste of a Veteran
  • 最終決戦!/The Final Battle!
  • 友のためなら/If it’s for a Friend
  • 音速の果てに/To the Limits of the Speed of Sound
  • FREE BATTLE/SECRET BOSS

Tips from source guide will be added to each mission. I actually won all races without using a guide just fine, but that was with good preparation. Some races get a little tight, so looking over the notes might help. Also, you wanna know the names of the people you’re fighting and stuff, don’t you?

RACE MISSIONS:

激突!デビルキラー/Duel! Devil Killer
Hirakawa’s Comment: It’s a request from someone named Devil Killer or something. I wonder if it’s a foreigner.
Opponent: Devil Killer Watanabe
Course Outline: 2 Laps, Inner Course
Difficulty: 1
Base Points: 500
Experience points: 1200

First opponent, so you win no problem with the default car. The corners aren’t tight on the inner course, so you don’t have to drift or slow down your speed. You can turn corners while still holding down accelerate. Remember you can only use Heat Action once, so save it for the second lap, especially since he might rubber band you. Time you wanna aim for is around 2 minutes.

息子を訪ねて/Visit my Son
Hirakawa’s Comment: This customer is a woman. It seems she’s searching for her son no matter what.
Opponent: Kiyokawa Kouji
Course Outline: 2 Laps, Inner Course
Difficulty: 2
Base points: 500
Experience Points: 1400

You can also win this with the starter car, but it might be a bit tighter. Even if you fall behind him a bit, using the HEAT Action on the final lap should ensure victory. Time you wanna aim for is around 2 minutes.

四天王、現る!/The Four Heavenly Kings Appear!
Hirakawa’s Comment: It’s a call for a claim against you, Suzuki-san. Their voice was kind of scary and roaring.  Any ideas?
Opponent: Crash Kajiwara
Course Outline: 2 Laps, Inner then Middle Course
Difficulty: 2
Base points: 500
Experience Points: 1600

The middle course has some tougher corners where using drift might be a good idea. If you’re still using the very starting condition of the car, you won’t be able to turn the difficult corners well. If you get the Chassis Type B upgrade at Level 7, you should be able to turn the corners at normal speed on the middle course, as well. The starting car should be enough to win, but if you want to have an easier time then you should head into customize and boost your stats. Time you wanna aim for is around 2:30 minutes.

After you win the race, Crash Kajiwara whines and you have to fight him. 300 exp.

走り屋の血/A Racer’s Blood
Hirakawa’s Comment: You were called by name, Suzuki-san. They are calling you out to the highway. I wonder if it’s that regular customer, Devil-what’s-their-name. They certainly favour you, eh, Suzuki-san?
Opponent: Muramatsu Chiken
Course Outline: 2 Laps, Middle Course
Difficulty: 3
Base points: 500
Experience Points: 1800

From here on out the enemy cars’ speeds will increase significantly, so you should upgrade. Passed tune-up level 3 will be good times. However, it is technically still possible to win with the starter cars with good HEAT useage. Again, Chassis Type B will allow turning the Middle Courses corners to become easier.

傾向と対策/Tendencies and Countermeasures
Hirakawa’s Comment: You’re being called to the highway. It was a customer with a very polite tone.
Opponent: Cool Yoshimi
Course Outline: 2 Laps, Middle Course then Outer Course
Difficulty: 3
Base points: 500
Experience Points: 2000

There are three opportunities for HEAT actions. Since you will pass through the middle course only once, feel free to use HEAT action there in the first lap. Then in the second lap do the outer course HEAT action then finish it with the one in front of the finish line. When you do the HEAT action on the outer course, you should increase the distance between you and your opponent significantly.

ベテランの味/Taste of a Veteran
Hirakawa’s Comment: Again, you’re being called out to the highway, Suzuki-san. It was a customer with a gentle voice. My heart raced a little bit.
Opponent: Gentle Nakamura
Course Outline: 2 Laps, Middle Course then Outer Course
Difficulty: 4
Base points: 500
Experience Points: 2200

Same course as last mission, but this guy’s speed is considerably higher. If you are at around Tune-up level 3 he’ll take close to a 100m distance from you in no time, but if you use HEAT actions well, you can win. Also, like before, use the middle course HEAT action in the first lap and the other two in the second. Time you want to shoot for is 2:40 minutes (can just make it with tune-up level 3).

最終決戦!/The Final Battle!
Hirakawa’s Comment: It’s that regular highway customer as always. He was saying stuff like, “the preparation of the stage is complete.”
Opponent: Devil Takamura
Course Outline: 2 Laps, Middle Course then Outer Course
Difficulty: 4
Base points: 500
Experience Points: 2400

The opponent’s speed isn’t all too different from the last guy, so you can beat Takamura the same way you beat Nakamura. Taka, Naka, they all the same Mura.

After you beat him you have to fight ALL the Devil Killer members you’ve raced up until now (including Generic Punk that you beat in the mandatory race). 6 opponents for 1800 exp.

After that, the Devil Killer menace is defeated! But wait, there’s more?!

友のためなら/If it’s for a Friend
Hirakawa’s Comment: A request for you, Suzuki-san. I wonder if it’s the highway again…huh?
Opponent: Wada Yuuzou
Course Outline: 2 Laps, Outer Course
Difficulty: 5
Base points: 1000
Experience Points: 2600

Save the heat actions for the second lap. If you bang around on the walls a bit, you can recover with HEAT actions or the boost. You’ll probably get two times to use boost, so use them when you got a good stretch. I tended to use it on the long stretch after the loop (on the bottom of the map) or near the finish line (not inside HEAT zone, though, of course). Recommended upgrades:

  • Tune-up level MAX (Lvl. 18)
  • Semi-racing Tires/セミレーシングタイヤ (Lvl. 16)
  • Hyper Turbo/ハイパーターボ (Lvl. 16)
  • Chassis Type C/シャシータイプC (Lvl. 15) for speed, Type B for balance.

音速の果てに/To the Limits of the Speed of Sound
Hirakawa’s Comment: A request from a customer named Onizuka. …huh? It’s a request for…our boss Nakajima?
Opponent: Onizuka Tooru
Course Outline: 3 Laps, Outer Course
Difficulty: 5
Base points: 1500
Experience Points: 2800

Pretty much same suggestions as before. Save those HEAT Actions for the end to pull ahead. He’s the last boss for a reason, but he’s definitely beatable if you have the set-up as was suggested in the last mission.

If you win, congrats! You get Sakura Fubuki  (Katana) for winning. This sword can be used to make the blue lightsaber, I’m pretty sure. Furthermore, you beat the Story of the Another Drama! Nice! Kiryu defeated some of the best racers around with his eyesore taxi, proving once more his god-status. You should still have some levelling to do, so do any customer mission you didn’t do (covered further below), do Free Drives, or race more in the Free Battle, which should now be unlocked and discussed next.

FREE BATTLE/SECRET BOSS

In Free Battle (found in the bottom row options, along with the Free Drives), you can re-battle all the opponents you’ve beaten. They are in order that you fought them. Furthermore, on the bottom of the list, is that a new name?! Who could that mofo be. It’s the not-so-secret, but totally bonus race battle!

The Name is Kodou
Opponent: Kodou Eiryuu
Course Outline: 3 Laps, Outer Course
Difficulty: 5
Base points: 2000

Being the fastest opponent, more so than Onizuka, even if you have speed at MAX he’ll rapidly pull away from you. He’s pretty ridiculous. It could be recommended to use the upgrades that create max speed (see previous couple races for parts) and Hyper Turbo. However, I (barely) managed to beat him with the balanced set-up (Chassis Type B over C) and I don’t think the results would change all too much with the little extra amount of speed. If you’re using Hyper Turbo, if it’s a distance of around 200m, it’s possible to catch up in one boost. The time you want to aim for is 4:05 minutes.

If you win, all you get is pride. You don’t get anything special for beating him, despite it being a hard race. It might seem unwinnable at parts, but if you stick it out and rock the final HEATs you can win. I was unable to even see his car at some points, but still won it with the final HEAT action pulling me ahead at the very end.

What Was Going On?! 一体何が起きてた?

Until I get my hands on a script, I can only go by memory, but here’s a really rough jist of what was going on with the whole Devil Killer thing:

First, the punk tries racing you. This is the mandatory one. The old guy who’s your fare at the time encourages you to race him and you win, making you a target for the Devil Killer gang. This starts the whole ordeal. The second guy you fight is the generic punk’s “aniki”, or “big bro” in the gang. He tries to avenge his lil’ homie, but loses too. Next you race Kiyokawa. His mom was in search of him because he ran away from responsibilities like finding a job. He was doing stuff at the highway stop you always go to and he wanted to join the Devil Killer gang. Watanabe from before is all like “uh ya sure if you can beat dis guy” so Kiyokawa races you to enter the gang. After you beat him he gets a lecture from Kiryu and his mom and is so impressed with Kiryu’s stuff that he decides to follow him in the taxi business, because there’s gotta be something about being a taxi driver that improves driving skills. After that, the Devil Killer 4 Kings show up. First was Crash Kajiwara. He is a sore loser and kind of an embarrassment to the other members. From there, you face Muramatsu, from work. He is annoyed that you were chosen to race the Devil Killer gang, feeling he is faster. He doubts Kiryu. So you beat him in a race and set him straight. After, you race Cool Yoshimi. He is calm, collected, polite, and beats his opponents by analyzing their weaknesses and formulating a plan. He claims there’s only a 1 percent chance for you to win, which Kiryu slaps him in the face with. He’ll say “were my calculations mistaken?!” over and over if you taunt him. After that, is Gentle Nakamura. He is a veteran racer and refined. He reveals that the boss of the taxi place you work at, Nakajima, used to be a racer himself?! He was the founder of the Devil Killer gang before leaving it and becoming a taxi boss. Kiryu talks to Nakajima about this and Nakajima talks about his past and demons. Then, you fight the leader of the gang, Devil Takamura. He promises to end the gang if he loses, but even after a loss, he doesn’t end it. He tries to fight Kiryu just to get his ass kicked. Onizuka shows up and shoos the gang off after telling them who he is, apparently a legendary racer all the way from the old days. He says he’s been training forever to one day beat Nakajima, whom he lost to years ago. From there your boss asks you to race in his stead, as he has given up the life of racing. Then, Wada, the kinda weird middle-aged guy from work shows up and challenges you. He wants to test you for the upcoming race against Onizuka. He says he used to work under Nakajima in the gang as a racer himself until Nakajima convinced him to join him in taxi land. He makes mention of the 3 top racers from back in the day. Kiryu assumes Wada is one, Nakajima another, and Onizuka the third. Wada loses and reveals he is not one of the Top 3. He always wished he could be, though. Finally, Kiryu meets Onizuka, who at first refused to race anyone but Nakajima. Kiryu said that if Onizuka cannot beat Kiryu, then he will never beat Nakajima. Onizuka takes this as a sort-of challenge to beat Nakajima and accepts the race challenge and loses. After losing he says he feels better for finally having a fun race and realizing he wouldn’t beat Nakajima anyway. He gives up his life as a racer. Nakajima shows up, they hug, and reconnect as old rivals. Then that old dude, the one from the very very first mission that told you to race in the first place? He shows up and is like “sup guys rememba me” and everyone is shocked. It’s Kodou! Turns out he was the third of the Top 3. They all reconnect and go drinking. They invite Kiryu and the rest of the taxi staff. Kiryu looks off to a wall or something and is like “I’m glad I met these people…” and it ends.

Then, in the bonus race, you race Kodou himself for fun.

FARE MISSIONS 送迎ミッション

There are two types of fare missions: driving and conversation. The driving missions mostly focus on how well you drive and if you get to the destination on time. However, there are still conversation replies you can use to boost your customer’s satisfaction even more. Conversation missions require no driving; it’s all just conversation replies and any events that follow them.

FARE NOTES:

  • To get the line-up of customers, talk to the lady, Hirakawa, at the front desk of the taxi office. It will bring you to the Mission and Customization screen. The race missions are the top option. Then, the customer missions are the middle row options. The bottom has the Free Drives.
  • The line-up of missions is always random, not in any pre-set order. Therefore, when listing the missions I will also list the title in Japanese for reference. Unfortunately, you’re just gonna have to look and see what characters match up to find the missions.
  • Once you complete a mission, 10,000 Yen will appear in your bank account that you can access via ATMs in convenience stores.
  • There’s no retry, so save often! If you cancel mid-mission it’s treated as a failure and you get no bonuses and Kiryu apologizing to customers.
  • If you leave the customer with a good impression (good driving, answers, on time, etc) you get bonus points (up to 1000) which can be used to level up your car for races (necessary) as well as extra money. On the right side of the screen is their status. A chillin’ face means they’re good. A huff-puff pissy face’s implications are pretty obvious.
  • However, even if you mess up missions, if you do them all you’ll get a little crown on the Another Drama status screen next to the missions signifying you completed them all. Ie, doing well is not necessary for completion, but doing well is necessary for bonus points and really, would you consider it completed if you finished it like a chump? Cahmahn.
  • Don’t sweat some little mess-ups during driving missions. Losing a few points here or there is okay as long as the rest is very much positive.
  • For the driving missions you gotta choose with square, triangle or circle. The first answer listed will be square, the second triangle and third circle. For the pure conversation missions, the answers are listed in the order as they appear on the screen in-game so no problem wondering which answer is which.
  • Even when there are no stop signals people will still cross at intersections, so be sure to be careful at all crosswalks. Sometimes they act like total psychos, too, so always be ready.
  • For conversation replies, best options are in RED.

FARE CONTROLS:
Left stick: Move the vehicle, left and right.
Right stick: Camera
L3 (left stick click): Honk horn
D-pad Left/Right: Turning on/off the blinker (turn signal).
Square, Triangle, Circle: Conversation Reply
L1: Perspective Change
L2: Brake
R1: Position Reset (puts you back properly on the road, but takes time and points)
R2: Accelerate

GOOD DRIVING POINTS:
Doing these make your customer happy. The points vary from mission to mission (these are the Free Drive values), but it’s a good reference for what carries how much weight.

Proper Signalling +3: Before you turn, turn on your blinkers in the proper direction.
Stopping at a Red Light +3: Properly stop at a red light.
Safe 20 Seconds +5: No mistakes for 20 seconds.
Satisfaction (Safety) +15: After the Safe 20 Seconds, continue safe driving.
Proper Stop +3: Properly stop at a stop mark (a hand symbol).
Evade Pop-out Pedestrians +8: Some pedestrians run out and jaywalk suddenly. Avoid them safely.
No Resets +5: Don’t use position reset. So make sure you park in the destination circle properly!
On Time +5: Reach the destination within the time limit.
Quick Arrival +15: Reach the destination quickly.
Good Reply: Giving good replies to customers also boosts their satisfaction.

BAD DRIVING POINTS:
Doing these make your customer upset. Best to avoid them obviously, but some situations call for a little risky driving.

Sudden Departure -1: Pressing hard on the acceleration from a standstill will jolt the car and lose you points.
Sudden Brake -1: A jolting brake isn’t very fun either. Ease into it.
Sudden Turn -3:  This ain’t crazy taxi, dawg!
Leaving Road -2: Stay on the road.
Contact -4: Hitting pedestrians and stuff isn’t fun.
Driving the Wrong Way -30: If you can somehow turn the car all the way around and drive the wrong way by accident, I will be amazed.
Violating Rules -3: Not stopping at the hand mark stop.
Ignoring Stop Signals -10: Don’t run red lights.
No Stop Signal -3: Turning without turning on your turn signal.
Bad Reply: Giving a bad reply decreases satisfaction.

  • What sports do you like?
  • What’s something you can brag about?

After the conversation (any option is fine) you will enter a chase battle (on foot). It’s the same as previous games.
The guy isn’t very fast, so it’s possible to just chase him normally and hit him with the 3-hit combo attacks.
After you catch him the mission ends.

Congratulations! That’s all of the missions! I was personally bummed there were more conversation missions than driving missions. I enjoyed driving around town. Oh, well! After all Fare Missions and Race Missions are done, you probably still won’t be max level, so head out to Free Drive and Free Battle!

FREE DRIVE

You can choose to drive on the highway (高速道路) or in the town (永洲街). Collecting little shiny things gets you 50 driver points. It’s a grind, so a better way to level up is probably just to the Free Battle (対戦) as mentioned before.

That concludes this! Thanks for reading! This is still a work in progress. I will edit mistakes, typos, weird writing, and of course if I can think of better translations. Maybe! One day I will get my hands on a game script and will write in detail what each passenger was talking about in the cab!

ALL CREDIT FOR MISSION DETAILS, UPGRADE DETAILS, CORRECT ANSWERS, MANY OF THE TIPS, ETC ETC ETC IS TO THIS GUIDE SITE: http://darage.com/ryu/index.php which has a very extensive and good guide for everything in the game. The link goes straight to the guide this was created from, which includes maps of the roads for each mission! I didn’t want to copy that far and didn’t think they were completely necessary (I didn’t use the map and got perfect completion. The good replies are the key!).

My contributions to this are purely just some extra tips, personal experience, some explanations and poor summaries of events
