  • In JPN he is literally saying “peace, peace” in his quote, but despite being an English word, in this context it has a different useage than English. It’s often used after a victory, etc when showing off complete with double peace signs. So it’s kinda like “woo, woo!” “yeah! yeah!” “alright! alright!”.

Good Point: Has an air about him
Bad Point:
Air of superiority

Menko (Japanese pogs)
Dislikes:
Seasons of falling leaves

  • Menko is a game where you have paper-like circles and try to knock other circles out of a ring by slapping a circle down on it so hard the wind from the impact blows the other one out. Since it requires using wind, it’s a pun.
  • His bad point, Senpaikaze wo fukasu, when taken literally is somethin’ like “blow the senior wind”. Senpai being the senpai everyone knows (one’s senior), kaze being wind, and fukasu being to puff, blow. “Play the old soldier” is a good possible phrase it can become, but the one I went with keeps the pun more intact. These puns coming all night, folks!

“I’ll turn ya into a hedgehog”
Good Point: Prodding
Bad Point:

Dislikes:
Injections

  • Needle Man’s good point is a sort-of double pun. In Japanese it can be read as “prickly/stinging assault/attack” or “prickly/stinging blame” or “prod” as in prod people in action. To make them move. Thing cattle prods. There is no kanji to fully differentiate, but that may have been deliberate. He attacks with needles, so yes he has a pointy attack, but it can also be said that he is prodding. So yeah. Funky.

“I’ll spin at ya way more than usual!”
Good Point: Good lobbyist
Bad Point:
Gets carried away
Likes:
Ice skating
Dislikes:
Bad Dancers

  • I wrote “good lobbyist” but yo listen up. In Japan, the term of Nemawashi is a term often used in business. Before deals or decisions are made in the boardroom, etc., they have someone/people meet with key decision makers outside (can include having drinks, good food, a good time). They also talk about the deal/decision and basically come to a conclusion about it before the official meeting. So when the official meeting comes ’round, there’s no long deliberations; everyone’s already decided and things proceed. What does this have to do with Top Man? The second kanji in Nemawashi, 回し’s verb form is 回す. Which means “turn”, “revolve”, etc. Nemawashi is kind of like, making the rounds. Talk about a contrived pun, eh?!

スネークマン
せまいちけいを、ちょうさするためにつくられたロボット。ヘビがたミサイルサーチスネークが、とくしゅぶき。

“Hmph, I can imagine your startled expression.”
Good Point: Quick on his feet
Bad Point:
Doesn’t think things through
Likes:
Startling people
Dislikes:
Boring traps/devices

  • His Good Point in Japanese (Kawarimi ga hayai, lit. “fast with kawarimi”) is an idiom that means to be Quick on One’s Feet, but Kawarimi when applied to ninjas is that move they do where they switch out with a log or whatever like in shows, etc. So a ninja pun. This pun is used again on Turbo Man for a different reason.

A balanced robot made for combat. He hasn’t been taught anything besides fighting.
“Now, we fight! We fight…”
Good Point: Works himself to the bone
Bad Point:
Poor taste
Likes:
Horror movies
Dislikes:
Strong feelings for things

  • His dislike is kinda hard to just turn into a single word. Kodawari, from kodawaru (拘り、拘る), when pertaining to something, expresses strong feelings towards or obsession for something. Like being very particular about clothing. Having a thing for girls with short hair. Have a thing for video games. Have an obsession with fashion worn when riding motorcycles. This fits Skull Man because he was only taught to fight, so he doesn’t know anything else. Thus, he doesn’t have any strong feelings towards anything.

Dislikes:
Things written in Katakana

  • The official English CD wrote his bio as his cost being low due to the coal and water. The Japanese one says the opposite, which I find more true, as he constantly burns coal and water and needs it to be refueled (also it’s wasteful).

  • Right away another stereotype, NICE. Speaks weird Japanese, cooks and likes Kung-fu. The Japanese he speaks isn’t inherently incorrect, but at the end of the sentence he says aru yo, which is commonly associated with foreign Chinese people speaking Japanese. They do similar things with other nationalities (Americans speaking is often all in katakana and from that you can just hear the horrible pronunciation). It’s a stereotype. To show this ‘unnatural’ Japanese, I made it unnatural English.

  1. Pingback: Rockman & Forte CD Database 1-50 Added! | Hondoori Game Center

  2. Wow, you are amazing. Keep up the good work. By the way, I hope that you pass the midterm. Greetings! 🙂

  3. I do not understand about Air Man’s good and bad:

Good Point: Has an air about him
Bad Point: Plays the old soldier

Do you mean he has an air about him means he is a charm ?
Do you mean he plays the old solider means he is a Veteran?

    • When someone has an “air about them”, it’s like they have almost a distinctive aura, or style emanating from them. The Japanese is very similar. You can be specific and say “he has a dignified air about him” or “he has a manly air about him” to say they give off a dignified or manly vibe. Air Man’s isn’t specified.
Play the old soldier is a bit of a seldom used term, but it means to use one’s own experience or seniority to act superior or make people do things for you or whatever. The Japanese is literally “blow the wind of superiority”. I have considered maybe “Has an air of superiority” but it’s very similar to the Good Point so I went against it.

  4. For Needle Man:

What does Stinging reproach means ? I tried to find it from Google. I still do not understand what it is. Burst Fire ?? Sharpy?

    • Reproach means to blame, basically. I tried to keep the pun alive, because in literal Japanese it’s like “he prickly blames” as in when he blames/criticizes people, it stings like being pricked by a needle. This can be seen as a good thing as it motivates people to do stuff. But I wanted to keep the pun intact and so the English.
But thanks to this little dialogue and defining it I was able to think of a word. Thanks! “Prodding”, as in prodding people into action. It works. Many of these CDs were done very late into the night so sometimes I get a loss of words. Redefining things later helps.

  5. Ahh, I understand. Many thanks. Keep up the good work! 😀

One more thing: Do you want me to send Japanese script of Roll, Auto (Rightot), and Dr. Light (Worrying about finding the CDs).

I have them and I can send them to you with .txt if you want to save your time.. no credit need. How do I send them to you ?

    • You managed to get all of them? Where’d you get them? Either way, thanks. As for sending it, hmmm…you could try uploading it on an upload site, maybe, as a .ZIP file?

You’ll definitely get a shout out for finding it!

  6. Forgive the big bump here. I’m not fluent by any means and am largely self-taught, but seem to be able to get the “feeling” behind some of these. And may be being too literal with others. Examples:

Wave Man’s bad point is “hitogirai” (person + hate), so I’d have rendered this “misanthrope,” but it might also be “social phobia.” In either case it’s a riff on how helpless he is in close combat.

Wind Man’s good point is literally “ryouri ga umai” or “[his] cooking is delicious.” And yes, he is made out to be the Chinese equivalent of blackface, *wow.*

Yamato Man’s bad point is “kane ga yowai” meaning “money is [his] weakness.” This could mean either bad with money or weak TO money, i.e. bribes, though I’d guess he’d explicitly be called “yokubari” (greedy) if this was the case.

Gyro Man’s bad point is indeed literally “looks down on people,” and can be written using the kanji for look and down *groa~n*

Stone Man gives the impression of being something like a rough-necked construction worker with a fondness for alcohol and karaoke…of course being a robot he prefers to walk and swill oil rather than Heineken…

Wave Man’s good point, “namidamoroi,” sounds like “cries easy” (literally “tears brittle?”) but also puns on “nami” (wave).

Gravity Man’s good point is indeed “eager for research,” but his bad point is a little more blunt…roughly “no social skills” rather than just “bad with people.”

I’m not too sure about Skull Man’s good point: seems to be “[even] flesh and bone are not spared,” so saying that he does indeed work hard. Bad point is indeed lack of taste; this could mean anything from bad social skills to lack of aesthetic sense.

Dive Man: Good point is literally “ears are good,” bad point is indeed “prone to vehicular sickness.” Poor guy. Who ever heard of a seasick ship’s captain? Wily screwed up…

Dust Man: Got these, yes. Good point is “big eater,” bad point is “breath is stinky.” And no wonder given what the poor guy has to do for a living. Someone throw a pack of TicTacs in there.

Pharaoh Man: Good point is more or less “charismatic,” yes. Bad point is “bijin ni yowai,” literally “weak to beautiful people.” So like Yamato Man’s money issues above, does this mean he gets tongue-tied around pretty women or that he, er, thinks with the little CPU…?

Drill Man: “Earnest worker” and, rather bluntly, “Planning skill is nil.”

Shadow Man’s bad point is “kangae ga asai,” literally “thought/planning is shallow.” I like “doesn’t think things through” for this, as you have it.

Snake Man’s bad point is literally “implacable,” but I’ve seen it used for vengeful as well. Sounds like “holds a grudge forever and always looks for ways to avenge it.”

Top Man’s profile, wow…I would *never* have caught those references. Nicely done!

Hard Man…his good point may better be expressed as the Britishism “stiff upper lip” as it’s literally “mouth is hard.” Bad point is “shy of troublesome things/can’t be arsed” so “lazy” works fine. I’d try not to move too if I weighed over 6000 pounds…

Magnet Man’s looks good. Good point is “Kanri-ryoku ga aru,” “there is/he has controlling power,” so “management skill” works well. And given he’s a giant magnet and his underlings are made of metal, this might be very literal. His lack of sense of direction is a weird one though, for exactly that reason. Does he interfere with his own internal compass or something?

You got Needle Man’s references down well. Good point is “chikuchiku sameru,” “tingling/needling attack (or blame),” and his bad point is straightforward “mouth is bad.”

Wood Man’s bio has one awful pun in it, in his bad point: “ki ga ooi” can mean “of many minds,” or “fickle” as you have it here, but also “of many trees” since there’s no kanji given…oysh.

Heat Man’s good point is literally “mai peisu/my pace,” and his bad one is “there is no passion,” using the word that almost always gets used as part of “hot-blooded.” How ironic, since he blasts out flames hotter than the surface of the freakin’ sun!

Flash Man’s good point is indeed “gentle with subordinates,” and his bad point is “makes complaints.” I’d flavor that as “kvetches,” but we’re already dealing with two languages here…

Clash Man’s good point is “frank/direct personality,” though it can also be refreshing (like the beer?). His bad point is literally “[the] hand[s] is without skill,” so “bad with hands” makes perfect sense.

Quick Man’s good point looks like a Chinese four-character proverb, “early/fast sleep, early/fast rise” and your translation is perfect both in word and feeling 🙂 His bad point is “[he] has no calmness/ease,” which works well as “restless.”

Bubble Man’s good point: “kororo ga hiroi,” “[his] heart/mind is wide.” Looks good. Bad point is “kane[ts–>dz]ukai ga arai,” literally “[his] use of money is rough” but probably works as “spends too freely” as you have it.

Metal Man’s bad point is pretty metaphorical. Could be “smart, but so sharp he’ll cut himself,” as its literal translation is something like “quite cutting things.” “Too shrewd” works but loses the flavor and the pun.

Elec Man…these are tough too. Very literally his good point is roughly “strong sense of his use/purpose in life.” His bad point, according to Google Translate, is “dog in the manger” or worse, “perverse person” (not in the sense of sexual perversion). This is a pretty harsh judgment…what did this guy do, anyway?

Bomb Man: Bad point is literally “mono wo daiji shinai,” roughly “does not hold [physical] things with importance,” in the sense that he’s not careful with them.

Guts Man: Good point is roughly “affections run deep,” bad point is “temper[ament] is short.” He likes karaoke, yes, and dislikes logic or theoretical subjects.

Cut Man’s bio has an awful pun. His good point sounds literally like “head cuts well” and would be a metaphorical way of saying “sharp/incisive thinker,” which itself is a bad pun for a guy with scissors on his head. Pee-yeuw. And his bad point is indeed “does not listen to what is said.”

Roll’s bad point isn’t [military] cowardice so much as a general low tolerance for scary situations. I’d translate this “scaredy-cat” honestly =P She probably hates movie night when it’s Skull Man’s turn to rent the DVDs…

    • No problem, always nice to see how other people see things. Different perspectives is good. Lots of the stuff you’re saying is indeed fairly on the money, and it becomes a case of personal wording. Lots of your personal translations are kinda rewordings of mine, etc. Also, I was always aware of the literal meaning, but the point of the project was to try (big “try”, haha) to avoid a lot of literal. Some, though, ended up a bit literal, cuz I am lazy with editing.

But good to see my little page piqued your interest and brought some discussion! I am primarily self-taught myself. It’s a long road, isn’t it?

For the harder (more super Japanese-y ones) I looked around the internet for Japanese message boards and other stuff where people discussed the meanings of phrases to kind of build a common reference point. Often the literal words being used hide deeper meanings. I learned a fair bit of traditional Japanese culture points while doing this. And those puns! My my.

Yes. Wave Man’s Bad Point actually more refers to him not like Social Interaction with People. Which I probably could have, and maybe should have wrote, but it also carries the meaning of him just Disliking being around people, etc, so I just shortened it. I am aware of its meaning.

Gravity Man “no social skills” = “socially inept”. Same thing, yo.

Yeah, Skull Man’s bad point literally turns into what you said, but it is in reference to working so hard. It is a pun even in Japanese because “bone” is literally in it, so in an attempt to preserve that pun, I used “work to the bone”. It’s pretty much the same thing.

Yes, Yamato Man’s is basically that he’s bad with money. Could also mean he is weak to it, too, yes, but in a way they can be one in the same. He is weak to the lure of money so when he gets some, he uses it right away and/or poorly. Of course, I wanna keep it short.

Yeah, Snake Man can’t let things go.

Magnet Man’s lack of direction I can assume has to do because magnets, on top of pulling things to them, are just as much pulled to things themselves, right? So he doesn’t have much of a sense of direction when he is being pulled here and there (more bad Capcom jokes, lol).

Yeah, Wood Man does have that pun (get used to em!), but I didn’t write it down as a note for some reason. But yeah, that’s because of the lack of kanji, you can read it as 気 or 木!

Yeah, Heat Man is “My Pace” (in katakana English no less), but in Japanese when referring to someone AS “my pace” it means a person who goes at their own pace. 「山田さんは本当にマイペースですね。」

Yeah, Metal Man’s was a loss I took. I wanted to retain the pun, but making it too long also makes the joke lose its oomph. I thought of just saying “too sharp”, but that just sounds like a physical sharp rather than mind. “Too sharp in mind” or something like that I didn’t like either because how is possible to be “too” sharp in mind? It’s a good thing. I would have to someone fit the rest in there or fully explain in a note, which I didn’t want to do. However, I shoulda made a note talking about the fact I lost the pun in the first place.

Yeah, Elec Man I considered lots of things to use as his Bad Point. It ultimately comes down to, in its essence, to the fact that he isn’t nice. He’s a jerk. So I just dropped all the long/confusing ones and made it simple.

Yeah, “scaredy-cat” would be a good one for Roll. I didn’t write cowardice with fighting in mind, but just being with everything, but it does sound a bit harsh, haha. She’s supposed to have cute points.

Again, thanks for the detailed comment! You seem to have a pretty good catch on things, and indeed spotted a lot of puns. I, too, was well aware of every bad pun in here, but unfortunately just couldn’t include all of them without being too contrived.

      • Yay, glad you’re not upset with the big bump!

Just had a thought: Metal Man’s “so sharp you’ll cut yourself” weakness is very very literal, because he’s weak to his own weapon :v

I don’t know how to put this into words, but I’m getting a certain feel for the characters that just reading about them doesn’t give. It’s like, after enough exposure you start to understand the stock characters from another culture’s trope cohort, you know? It’s the difference between mentally subvocalizing “Osaka-ben = southern drawl” and actually understanding the language and its idiom in context.

      • Haha, well it’s not much of a “bump” since this page is meant to just be looked at forever! But yeah no prob!

Yeah, the Osaka = Texas voice thing was always pretty lame. The more you listen to various Japanese characters and their dialogues you really get where they come from. Also, the gags are also often quite different, etc etc. I’ve noticed so many jokes would be totally lost on Western audiences or just would be too hard to put in to English. And thus, that’s where the heavy localization/translation comes in, radically changing things. In one way it’s a shame that the original thing is lost, but yeah, it wouldn’t have had any good impact on anyone outside of those really familiar with Japanese humour points anyway, so.
        Ramblez!
